Christmas
at the castle - Cribs from the Erzgebirge
From the 13th of November 2004 until the 9th of January 2005
The 24th, 25th and 31st of December 2004 and also the
1st of January 2005:
open from 10 a.m. until 4.30 p.m.
“Christmas at the castle” is
placed under the enchanting sign
of the nativity scenes from Erzgebirge.
The exhibition unveils rare pieces
of the XIXth and XXth century from
the famous collection of Leonhard
Jeckelmann.
The art
of Christmas benefits from a long tradition
in the Erzgebirge, a mountainous
region of Germany. Since
the end of the XVIIth century, wood craftsmanship constitute
one of the main activities of its population. Still today,
toys and nativity scenes made from polychrome wood manufactured
in Seiffen, Annaberg or Lössnitz are renowned in the
entire world.
Amongst the curiosities displayed at the castle
of Gruyères,
we find pyramids of heat, which mingle the life of Christ
to the typical occupants of Erzgebirge. A mechanic Mount,
angels of light and flying buttresses, nutcrackers and
little chaps smoking, all of which complete the festive
atmosphere, for the delight of children and adults. |
