As time goes by,
the name of Huggler-Wyss has become synonymous with quality woodcarving.
This family-run business is one of the oldest and best known in Switzerland
and has been creating the famous wooden figures of Brienz for five generations.
The exhibition at Gruyères Castle brings together 5 major nativity
scenes. This composition offers a glimpse at the past and present production
hand-carved by the "Oberland Bernois" woodcarvers.
Kaspar Huggler (1808-1846), and especially his son Johann (1834-1912) nicknamed “the
king of the Brienz sculptors”, have presented their work at universal exhibitions
in European capitals thus building the family’s international renown. Hans
Huggler-Wyss (1877-1947) carved the first nativity scene, named “Christnacht”,
in 1915. With a skilful technique, a delicate colouring and the invention of
picturesque characters, this nativity scene has become one of the most popular
sold in Switzerland. Huggler-Wyss’ successors have pursued his work, using
his technique as inspiration to create new models. The accurate finishing, the
love of detail and the innovative verve still remain unchanged by today’s
artisans.
