Christian
Dupré - Shamanic
art from the Himalaya
From
the 20th of May until the 29th of October 2006
The Castle of Gruyères presents you with
an unusual discovery between tribal sculpture and photography.
Godlike and therapeutic, the shaman has supernatural powers that allows him to
come into contact with the spirit world and the metaphysical spheres. With reference
to the rites practised in the Himalaya, a fascinating shamanic statuary art has
developed. Christian Dupré, photographer from the Gruyère region
and mountain guide, is an authority on the culture and traditions from the Himalaya.
On his trips to Nepal, he has gathered an important collection of bronze and
wood statuettes in order to preserve their posterity.
The exhibition at the castle presents you with seventy pieces amongst the most
beautiful from this collection. The shamans with their proud expression, the
riders captured in the movement of journey, the mountain bestiary composing an
evocative fresco and, at the same time, surprising us with their modern forms.
In parallel are shown, the pictures taken by Christian Dupré testifying
of his personnel eye. These images favour the approach to the exhibited figurines
as well as giving a subtle aesthetic variation. |
