Christmas
at the castle - Christ Child’s cribs from Krakow’s (Poland)
Ethnographic Museum
From the 17th of November 2007 until the 13th of January 2008
Open every day from 10 a.m. until 4.30 p.m. including Christmas and
New Year's days
The Ethnographic Museum of Krakow will display over thirty nativity
scenes, one of the most festive testimonies of the rich tradition
of polish Christmas. The exhibition, bringing together centuries old
pieces as well as recent works, emphasises on the architectural fantasies
that make up a spectacular set for the Nativity representation.
Well set in the use and customs, the "szopka", the Cracovian
Nativity Scene is dressed as a multicoloured and slender building:
the ornamented façade, the turrets and domes are inspired by
the most beautiful monuments in Krakow. The figures appearing on the
different floors and through the openings will provoke some surprise.
The Holy family isn’t with just humble shepherds and gleaming
Magi, but also with the famous dragon Wavel as well as different personalities
from today’s political and cultural polish scene. Finally, the
choice of materials - tin Leaf, silk paper, pearls, glass etc. -
is not alien to the aesthetics that characterize the "szopka".
