Sergio de Castro - Paintings
From the 31st of May until the 9th of November 2008
Dedicated to the painter and artist in stained glass of international renown that is Sergio de Castro, the exhibition at the Castle of Gruyères states two important parts of his work. Landscapes of distant horizon, subtly ordered workshops and still life paintings of grave forms are all themes that he privileges in his painting since the end of the 1950s. Following these, from 1972, are works of baroque verve with sonorous and abundant colours. It is also then, that the Franco-Argentinian artist tackles a new subject: the nude. This pictorial discovery all in emotion and contrast is enriched by a set of drawings representative of the 1980s and 1990s.
Born in 1922 in Buenos Aires, Sergio de Castro began is artistic education with Manuel de Falla (1876-1946), studying music and composition. He also benefits from the influence of Joaquin Torres-Garcia (1874-1949), founder of the movement “circles and squares”. In 1949, Sergio de Castro, moves to Paris and invests the workshop that he still occupies today. Dedicating his carrier to painting and monumental art, he finds his inspiration in his Mediterranean journeys. In 1981, his stained glass works of the Prophets in the collegiate church Notre-Dame de Romont (Switzerland) distinguishes him as one of the important names of our times in the art of stained glass. Exhibitions all over the world and the inauguration in 2007 of the donation Sergio de Castro at the Museum of Fine Arts of Saint-Lô (France) crown 60 years of intense creation. |
