Angels Galore
Christmas Apparitions and Myriads
Angels are everywhere around Christmas: they are here to proclaim and celebrate the birth of Jesus. They give life to enchanting Biblical scenes. Angels and archangels were shaped by ancient times in Rome, Greece, and the Middle East. Whether they are adorably pudgy or shrouded in white, these winged beings are everywhere, in both holy and secular art.
In an exceptional setting at Gruyères Castle, Angels Galore invites the public to meet some of the sky’s inhabitants. Christmas angels and their attributes—musical instruments, fleurs de lys, crowns, scepters, or speech scrolls—explore artwork and old liturgical objects. They appear in all shapes and forms, graceful cherubs as well as solemn messengers. Artists Diane Deschenaux, Anja Jenny, and Maria Eugenia Poblete explore the figure of the angel—and even its evil alter ego—to enrich this exhibition.
