Jon Merz
Le jardin d'eau
Gruyères Castle invites Jon Merz (*1981) to confront the painters of the Bovy family's former artistic colony. Graduated from the High School of Art in Hamburg, the artist from Neuchâtel renders reminiscences of landscapes and figures from uncertain origins. In his works, he ardently invokes the pioneers of modern and contemporary painting, revisiting their legacy through the prism of our own century. Taking a reverse path from his predecessors, who delivered impressions of an observed world on canvas, Jon Merz composes from abstraction or mental images. With brisk brushstrokes, the painter conjures up expressive landscapes filled with vibrant reflections that seem to evoke a lost paradise, a nature into which the viewer's gaze deliciously plunges.
